Redacting Competitive Detail in Charts Shown to Mixed Agency–Client Rooms
Automotive clients frequently require briefing materials that satisfy a room of dealer principals without exposing individual dealer performance. The chart must show segment movement; the labels must not identify who is underperforming.
Three annotation patterns we use
Region aggregation. Roll dealer-level bars into provincial clusters with a minimum cell size of five dealers. Small markets merge into an "other" category listed in the appendix without naming members.
Indexed performance. Show each segment as an index against the national average (100 = average) rather than absolute units. The room sees direction without seeing raw dealer volumes.
Time-shifted release. Current-period charts use aggregated labels; dealer-level detail arrives in a separate folio marked confidential and distributed after the group session.
Print considerations
These charts appear in bound folios printed on matte stock. We test redaction at print size because a label that works on screen may become readable when enlarged for a boardroom wall chart. Font size, grey-scale contrast, and footnote placement are part of the annotation brief — not an afterthought.
